Project #1

When starting this project I first looked at TD Associates Architectural Group’s demands for their new logo image. TD Associates wanted not only a catchy logo, but also a logo that shows the true essence of their company. My first idea was to use the line and the pen tool to create an artistic T and D. The idea was successful; however, the logo did not advertise what TD Associates Architectural Group had for their consumers. So I went back to the drawing board and started to use a little word play; and came up with Think Design Associates and the image of a light bulb. I design the light bulb by using the line tool and the ellipse tool. First I formed a circle by holding down the rectangle tool until the side tool bar showed up and clicked on the ellipse tool. Using the control and the shift key I formed an even circle in the middle of the document. Next I used the line tool and the ruler lines to evenly spread the duplicated vertical lines around the top half of the circle and a few horizontally along the bottom with text. After changing the font size and style I group the image and rotated it about 30°. Next I used the same steps in the book to place the new logo into the letterhead, business card, and the envelope. Lastly I used my phone number, home addressed and e-mail addressed for the contact information just as the book instructed.

Project two was very fun to work on. It consisted of our client wanting a new flyer design for their city’s art and craft festival in Laguna Beach California. Our client wanted an eye catching design that could be used for multiple things; such as t-shirts, bags and so on. Before I began making my form of the arts festival flyer I went through the practice project in the book to learn how to use some of the tools featured in InDesign and followed the steps from class on how to use PhotoShop. Since InDesign is not the best tool at editing pictures, I used PhotoShop to edit the sawdust picture I found on Google search engine. I wanted to start there because the picture was smaller and stretching it in InDesign would cause it to look deformed. Also the layering tool in PhotoShop was very useful in layering the text on to the sawdust. Photoshop help give the text the effect of someone drawing the letters in the sawdust. In the last project I stuck to the format of the exercise project because I was a little unsure of what to do, but in this project I wanted you use my on creative layout. My idea was to have the top portion of this flyer be used for t-shirts, bags and more. Also I step up the layout in this format because I thought it would be easy to read and I wanted to show case some of the artworks.

This project was focused on learning how to apply tables to a InDesign document. It consisted of creating a four month calendar with animal pictures and coupons. The first task at hand was to figure out the orientation of document, which I choose to be landscape. Next I went about formatting the image boxes for the animal pictures and coupon images. After finding the images and placing them, I then created the table for placing the days of the month. this is similar to creating files in excel without having to copy and paste them to another document. With that page being done I was then able to create a master page that I copied throughout the rest of the document. After that I only needed to change the months and the order of the days. Looking online helped me figure out the correct order of the days and also with applying the holidays to certain dates. I really enjoyed learning this new way of using InDesign in regards to creating tables.

This week’s project was creating a menu in InDesign. The main focus of me in this project was to continue to learn the usage of master pages in an InDesign document but I wanted to keep it simple. My idea for this document was to create a menu that could be used in the restaurant and could also be passed out as advertisement. Also I incorporated a delivery service which also made it handy to have them smaller and easier to manage. When creating this document I used one main outside source, which was Adobe Illustrator, for some of the images. Adobe Illustrator allows you to break down an image of a document and use the image piece by piece picking out the parts you like. I really enjoyed using Adobe Illustrator because it helps out with those occasions when you see an image that you like but you only want to use part of it rather than the whole picture. Working on some of the project made me realized why it is so expensive for a restaurant to have menus, because it is a very time consuming task. Especially for restaurant chains that have to not only change that one restaurant’s menu but all restaurant menus in various locations. However, if those restaurants invest in using InDesign with master pages and Paragraph and Character Style their life would be a whole lot easier when creating a new restaurant menu.
